What’s Your Favorite Google Wave Gadget?

Google Wave is still a new phenomenon in the social media world. There is no Google Wave App Store yet and the API is relatively new, which means that Google Wave Gadgets are hard to find.

The crux of Google Wave (Google Wave) is the extensions/apps or what Google Wave is calling “Gadgets”. Embeds and robots will have their place, but most likely not for the common user. Google (Google) was kind enough to provide us with the basic gadgets: Google Search Box, Google Maps (Google Maps), Yes/No, and a few others (Google Wave API sample gallery).

Are there any productive gadgets out there you are using yet? Do you have any suggestions? I’m definitely a fan of the “Collaborative Sudoku” gadget (direct gadget url), but what’s your favorite Google Wave Gadget?

Barack Obama love affair with Google ends

President Obama faces calls to crack down on the dominance of the search giant that was his greatest supporter

US President Barack Obama

Too good to last: Obama will have to deal with widespread concern over copyright and Google's power in the online advertising market

Last January Google threw a post-inauguration party in Washington to celebrate the election of President Barack Obama. The internet giant had good reason to be happy. Google’s top executives had been early backers of Obama’s campaign and Eric Schmidt, the chief executive, was one of four Googlers on the president’s transition team.

As if to underline their closeness, Obama even used Google’s YouTube to address the nation before his inauguration. At the party, A-list geeks such as Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes and Craigslist’s Craig Newmark mixed with B-list celebrities Jessica Alba and John Cusack and raved it up to 1980s tunes.
Until a few years ago Google had largely ignored Washington. Now Schmidt is one of the few chief executives still welcome in the White House. But the honeymoon period may soon be over. In the coming months Google will face a series of challenges as its rivals and critics lobby against its enormous dominance on the net and its ambitions elsewhere. The first test comes next week over Google’s controversial plans to build the world’s biggest online library.

Google’s self-avowed mission is to “organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful”. To that end it has been scanning library books and has so far amassed digital copies of more than 10m titles — including 500,000 volumes held by the Bodleian in Oxford. In 2005 the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers sued for “massive copyright infringement”. The two sides reached agreement in October 2008, with Google promising to pay the Authors Guild $125m (£76m) to set up a way of sharing profits made by Google Books with copyright owners and offer an opt-out to objecting authors and publishers. Check Internet Performance with Google's M-Lab

Have you been wondering whether you're getting the broadband connection you were promised by your Internet Service Provider (ISP)?

If your answer is yes, then you'd be happy to know that there are tools being devised by Google's M-Lab, 0r Measurement Lab, that can help get answers to your Internet's performance related questions.

Measuremt Lab Tools can help you test your broadband connection, including measuring its speed and evaluating the performance of certain applications.

M-Lab is at the beginning of its development and is only a "proof of concept", says the M-Lab disclaimer.

When announced, 3 tools will be available on 3 servers at one location, and the tools will only be able to support a limited number of simultaneous users. "We intend to greatly expand the variety of tools and the servers, as well as support more users. A total of 36 servers will be deployed across 12 locations early in 2009, and we hope to roll out others soon after," say the developers at M-Lab.

M-Lab will offer a Network Diagnostic Tool which helps test an Internet connection speed and also offers a diagnosis of problems limiting speed. Also offered is Glasnost, a tool meant to test whether your BitTorrent is being blocked. Lastly, Network Path and Application Diagnosis is a tool offered that diagnoses common problems that impact last-mile broadband networks.

Google will be hosting the tools on 37 servers in the U.S. and Europe.

iGoogle Gadgets Are Getting Social Smarts

New social features are popping up in iGoogle gadgets, those apps you can add to your personalized Google homepage. For instance, the My Google Book Search Library gadget, which lets you search books and create a personal digital library, now asks people who have OpenSocial profiles if they want to allow the gadget to "know who I am and access my profile" and "post updates to my Friends group." This appears to be done through Google Friend Connect. A source sent us the screenshot at left, so this could very well just be bucket testing on the part of Google.

But it makes sense. Google has been pushing Friend Connect onto other Websites as a way for them to tap into this same profile data. Individual apps in the form of iGoogle gadgets can benefit just the same. Google has allowed developers to play around with adding social features to iGoogle gadgets since last April, treating them effectively as OpenSocial apps.

Perhaps Google is now ready to socialize iGoogle gagdets more broadly. Combined with its recent changes to allow for wider canvas pages for each app, iGoogle itself might be taking on more of the trappings of a social network. All it needs is a buddy list and activity feed.
